Peace in The Middle East

The topic of the American presence in the Middle East is something I am actually very passionate about. I got to take a three week class at UCSD a couple years ago that covered Terrorism primarily, and the third week was spent entirely on this topic. Having actually spent the time digging into this, I now feel that it is so much more complicated than I or most people have ever expected. The possibility of a self elected government is something I personally hope for, and would support whole-heartedly.

If there were to be a fully organized, proper, and open election for a legitimate government, I feel that it is something that should be supported by the United States. There are many things that we can do for the Middle East and the countries involved, but we can in no way provide them with a government of any sort. That is something that must completely come from within. We can try to help and guide them in some small behind the scenes ways, but on the whole, it is not up to us. I feel that we do not even want to play a large part in supporting certain candidates for fear of influencing the results, positively or negatively. We could try to instill our own idea of a government, put in power the individuals we choose, but that would only make things harder for the countries involved. We might as well be considering them to be colonies if that is how we act, and that is a hole we do not want to dig for ourselves.

A government is something that must be discovered by the country itself. That is what the United States did, we decided that we did not like the government we were under, so we left and created our own. Obviously the Articles of Confederation are proof that it was not a hole in one, but a process. We had to create the government ourselves, based on what we decided on as a people group. The same process must happen in the Middle East. We cannot expect them to automatically accept whatever government and leaders we think is good for them. Instead we must allow them to do this for themselves, make the necessary mistakes, and build it for themselves.

The United States must step back and let things work out for themselves in the Middle East. I also know that we are hunting for terrorists, and working to keep our own country safe from said threats, that is a large part of our presence in these countries. That is fine, it is necessary. On the other hand, we cannot force our way into their newly growing political structure, just because we are America and we think we know best. There are already a suprisingly large number of players in the decision making processes, they do not need an obnoxious third party who thinks they know everything there is to know. The United States really needs to step back, keep ourselves and the civilians safe as best we can, and let them learn on the own, like a child really. There are some lessons that simply cannot be taught, only learned.

  1. Your blog was real good. I enjoyed reading it. Now I want to take a class that covers this topic a bit more. I agree with you when you say about helping the Middle East and how we can help all we want but it is really up to them. It is very true because it is just like giving a friend advice. You can give a person advice but it is up to them if they want to take your advice. That is just a person; imagine a whole group or dozens of people. It is not really up to us to change their minds on what they believe, it is mainly on them. I also agree with you about the installing of government on them, we could try. For me I think we could only try for so long before it gets worse. I liked how you said that they should discover their own government. That is true, that is how we did it. You said exactly what I am talking about, we did not like how governments use to be so we created a new one. I liked your last paragraph, I think the United States should pull back from helping the Middle East too. Yes we are there to keep our country at peace, but if they are going to do another attack on us they can go ahead and do it with or without us being in the Middle East. They can go ahead and do it either way. The Middle East needs to solve their own problems.

  2. Well I agree with on this one hundred percent. I wrote my blog on the same thing and I felt the same way you do. I think that America should back out of the Middle Eastern government and let them make decisions on their own and give the people of those countries what they want. I think you said it best that some lessons just need to be learned, america can't teach these countires anything if they just keep trying to force the type of government we have on them. I really liked how you commentedon the articles of confederation and how how we are acting like England did to us when we decided to declare our independence. I just talked about that stuff in my history class so I thought it was very smart of you to add that in there and make america condratict it self in a way. America didn't want to be pushed to have there government run a certain so why should we be pushing Middle Eastern countries to do something that we ourselfs didn't want to do. I thought your blog was really good and I like reading it.

  3. I think that’s really cool that you took that class on this topic, and it broadened your understanding of what’s going on in the Middle East. I think they should offer opportunities like that and opportunities of other kinds to allow people to become more educated and involved in our government, seeing as the news is so biased, leaning towards their respective parties. This way, people will get the real idea of what’s going on and be able to make their own opinion of what’s going on. I also feel that we need to just leave and let them decide what kind of government they want. Even if they do decide to turn to a democracy, we have no influence on how they choose to employ this; however, if they choose to turn to another form of government, we have no purpose of being there. We don’t seem to have much of an influence if our soldiers are still in harm’s way for the sole purpose of forming a government. I definitely agree that we need to pull our troops out and bring them home, and then we can finally begin to put more focus on fixing our own country.
